Item Details
A rare and exceptional antique Georgian Sheraton period satinwood marquetry inlaid display cabinet dating to circa 1800, of outstanding quality and highly unusual design. This magnificent example of late Georgian cabinetmaking features beautifully figured satinwood, enriched with elaborate marquetry inlay using a variety of contrasting woods to create exquisite classical motifs, cherubs, floral arrangements, ribbons, swags and decorative scrollwork.
The particularly rare and distinctive upper section comprises two elegant open display tiers, each featuring beautifully executed marquetry inlaid back panels with intricate classical decoration. These are enclosed by delicate brass latticework galleries and supported by finely turned columns, creating a wonderfully decorative arrangement.
The extensive marquetry work to both display tiers is an exceptional feature, with the intricate designs formed from individually selected and carefully inlaid contrasting woods rather than painted decoration.
The lower section features a beautifully figured satinwood top above two drawers, fitted with decorative brass handles and enhanced with further intricate marquetry inlay. Below are two elegant glazed cabinet doors with attractive oval glazing bars, opening to reveal useful display and storage space. The cabinet is further complemented by beautifully figured satinwood sides, delicate contrasting string inlay and elegant Georgian proportions.
The quality and intricacy of the marquetry are particularly impressive, displaying the classical influences and refined decorative characteristics associated with the finest Sheraton period furniture.
The harmonious combination of satinwood, contrasting exotic wood inlays, delicate brasswork and beautifully balanced proportions demonstrates a high standard of craftsmanship.
The unusual architectural arrangement of the two open display tiers above the glazed lower cabinet is a particularly distinguishing feature, offering an exceptionally attractive setting for displaying fine porcelain, ceramics, silver, glassware and objets d'art. The extensive marquetry decoration throughout the upper section adds considerably to its decorative appeal and makes this a particularly interesting example of Georgian furniture.
A magnificent and highly unusual antique Georgian Sheraton satinwood display cabinet, combining exceptional decorative craftsmanship with an elegant and practical design. A wonderful statement piece for a drawing room, dining room, library or refined interior, and a particularly desirable addition to a collection of fine English antique furniture.
