A striking and highly decorative antique Black Forest cuckoo clock beautifully hand carved with an expressive bear subject. The quality of the carving is immediately apparent with deep relief work and well defined detail throughout far superior to the more commonly seen flatter examples. The case is centred by a traditional dial with Roman numerals and ornate hands flanked by two standing bears in animated poses. Above a larger bear stands proudly atop the chalet roof creating a bold sculptural silhouette. The surrounding carved foliage and branches add depth and movement giving the piece a strong three dimensional presence on the wall. Clocks of this type were produced in the Black Forest region of Germany where skilled craftsmen combined timekeeping with decorative carving to create pieces that were both functional and visually engaging. Bear examples are particularly sought after as they are less common and offer a stronger visual impact than standard leaf designs. The clock retains its original chain's pinecone weights and pendulum and operates with a traditional weight driven movement. The cuckoo bird emerges on the hour adding both charm and movement making this not just a timepiece but a focal feature within a room. This is a well carved and very appealing example that sits comfortably above average market pieces. It displays beautifully and offers strong decorative appeal for both traditional and more contemporary interiors. Condition: Good antique condition with age related wear. The carving remains crisp and well defined. Complete with weights chains and pendulum. Dimensions: Height: 32 cm (12.60 in) Width: 22 cm (8.66 in) Depth: 16 cm (6.30 in) Date: 1880 Origin: German Condition / Servicing Note: Please note that antique clocks are complex and sensitive mechanical objects. While some clocks may be running at the time of listing we cannot guarantee ongoing performance without a full inspection and testing period by our specialist horologist. Where inspection, testing, or servicing is required this process can take between 2–12 weeks depending on the clock, the work needed, and current workload. This careful approach helps ensure the clock is properly assessed rather than rushed. Clock Warranty All clocks purchased from London City Antiques are supplied with a 12-month warranty from the date of purchase. This warranty covers mechanical faults and failures arising from normal use. It does not extend to damage resulting from improper handling, unauthorised tampering, accidental or physical damage, environmental factors (including humidity, temperature fluctuations, or exposure to direct sunlight), or misuse. Should a clock develop a genuine fault within the warranty period that meets the above conditions, we will, at our discretion and at no cost to you, arrange for the repair or replacement of any defective parts. All remedial work will be carried out by a fully qualified and experienced horologist. In the unlikely event that a fault cannot be satisfactorily resolved, a full refund will be offered.
