Item Details
Exceptional antique Victorian burr walnut bureau writing desk of outstanding quality, dating to circa 1860 and displaying superb cabinetmaking, wonderful proportions and exceptional attention to detail throughout.
The bureau is crafted from beautifully figured burr walnut, chosen for its rich swirling grain and wonderful warm colour. The raised upper section is fitted with three drawers, including a wider central drawer with twin brass handles, all retaining attractive period brass furniture.
Below is a beautifully figured shaped fall front which opens to reveal a superb fitted writing interior. The interior incorporates a rich burgundy leather writing surface together with a series of small drawers and compartments, creating a practical and particularly handsome workspace.
A further three drawers are positioned beneath the writing section, providing generous storage and retaining their attractive brass handles. The bureau is raised on an impressive base, with magnificent acanthus-carved cabriole front legs terminating in boldly carved paw feet. These unusually elaborate supports give the bureau considerable presence and distinguish it from more conventional examples of the period.
Although we have found no maker's mark, the exceptional quality of the cabinetmaking, choice of timber, sophisticated construction and accomplished carving indicate the work of a highly skilled 19th-century cabinetmaker. Its unusual design and superior execution suggest that it may well have been individually commissioned.
A particularly impressive and substantial Victorian bureau, combining highly decorative burr walnut with a beautifully fitted and practical writing interior. The colour and patination are superb and it would make a magnificent statement piece in a study, library, drawing room or sophisticated contemporary interior.
