Item Details
A superb large antique French Louis XV style kingwood and ormolu mounted partners bureau plat desk dating to circa 1850, beautifully proportioned and of exceptional quality.
The substantial rectangular top retains its original characterful light tan leather writing surface with decorative gilt tooling and a central gilt motif, surrounded by finely figured kingwood crossbanding and an elegant brass moulded edge.
Designed as a true freestanding partners desk, it is fitted with six oak-lined drawers, three to each side, allowing the desk to be used and admired from either direction. The shaped friezes display particularly attractive kingwood veneers with fine geometric and chevron banding, complemented by ornate gilt bronze ormolu mounts and decorative escutcheons.
The desk stands on four elegant shaped cabriole legs, each beautifully veneered in kingwood and terminating in decorative ormolu sabots. Particularly impressive are the substantial scrolling foliate ormolu mounts to the corners and the additional gilt bronze ornament beneath the drawers, giving the desk a wonderfully rich appearance without overwhelming its elegant proportions.
The quality of the cabinet work is evident throughout, from the carefully selected veneers and oak-lined drawers to the extensive ormolu decoration and beautifully finished reverse. Being completely freestanding and fitted with drawers on both sides makes this an especially desirable example of the classic French bureau plat.
At over 160 cm wide, this is a substantial statement desk while remaining an extremely practical size for a private study, library, drawing room or sophisticated contemporary home office. The wonderfully aged leather writing surface contrasts beautifully with the warm colour and figuring of the kingwood and adds considerable character.
A handsome and highly decorative 19th century bureau plat combining impressive scale, fine craftsmanship and practical proportions.
