Antique Victorian Set of Six Carved Oak Barley Twist Dining Chairs

A handsome set of six antique Victorian carved oak dining chairs dating to around 1880, with wonderfully tall backs, barley twist supports and richly carved crest rails. Their strong architectural form, dark oak colour and deep red upholstery give them a particularly striking presence. Each chair has a tall shaped back with an upholstered central panel, framed by barley twist uprights and surmounted by a deeply carved scrolling crest. The seats are upholstered in red leather with traditional brass studding, contrasting beautifully with the dark oak frames. The chairs stand on distinctive carved front legs with scroll and paw-like feet, joined by turned stretchers, with plain square rear legs. The combination of carving, barley twist work and substantial proportions gives the set a very decorative late Victorian appearance. A particularly impressive set of Victorian dining chairs, ideal for a large dining room, library or dramatic contemporary interior.
