Antique Victorian Set of Five Flemish Carved Oak Tavern Scene Wall Panels

A wonderful set of five antique Victorian carved oak panels dating to circa 1880, finely carved in deep relief with lively Flemish-style tavern and village scenes. Each panel is individually carved with wonderfully expressive figures dressed in 17th-century costume, depicting scenes of drinking, smoking, music, dancing and everyday social life. The compositions are full of character and movement and are very much in the tradition of Flemish and Dutch genre paintings associated with artists such as David Teniers and Jan Steen. The carving is particularly good, with deeply modelled figures, architectural interiors, furniture, barrels, tables and everyday objects creating a strong three-dimensional effect. The oak has developed a rich dark patina which enhances the depth of the carving beautifully. Originally made as decorative furniture panels, most likely for a substantial late 19th-century sideboard or cabinet, they now work exceptionally well as decorative wall art. Displayed together they make a very striking collection, while each panel is detailed enough to stand alone.
