Item Details
An antique Victorian English burr walnut tea caddy of classic sarcophagus form, raised on bun feet and of excellent colour throughout. The lid is beautifully shaped and finely carved with dual initials set within decorative roundels, framed by a classical motif of foliage and birds, suggesting the piece was commissioned for a particular household.
The tea caddy opens to reveal its original fitted interior with two lidded compartments for storing different teas. In the Victorian period tea was a valuable commodity and such caddies were used to keep it secure, often locked and only brought out when serving. The central mixing bowl is no longer present which is common, however the interior remains intact and displays well.
The burr walnut is of particularly good quality with rich figuring across the lid and body, complemented by simple inlaid lines that highlight the shape. It is both decorative and practical and works well as a standalone piece.
The carved initials “RW” and “MK” are most likely those of the original owners, adding a personal element and a sense of history to the piece.
