Item Details
An outstanding quality antique Victorian burr walnut floral marquetry piano top Davenport desk having exquisite inlaid decoration throughout. The unusual piano top form gives this exceptional Davenport a wonderfully elegant flowing shape making it far more decorative and distinctive than standard examples.
The beautifully figured burr walnut veneers are complemented by intricate floral marquetry inlays across the tambour top, sides, drawers and gallery. The cylinder front opens smoothly to reveal a fitted interior with drawers, divisions and a green leather writing surface with gilt tooling.
This exceptional Davenport stands on elegant turned supports with unusual carved Greek key brackets and shaped platform feet all displaying superb craftsmanship and attention to detail. Davenport desks became highly fashionable during the Victorian period as compact writing desks designed for both practicality and elegance, originally commissioned for Captain Davenport from whom the design takes its name.
A truly decorative and highly unusual example of outstanding quality with exceptional colour and figuring throughout.
