Item Details
A rare and highly unusual antique Regency rosewood quartetto nest of four tables of outstanding quality. Crafted from beautifully figured rosewood, this elegant and versatile set is distinguished by its ingenious design incorporating an integrated chess table within the second largest table.
The largest table forms the outer case and features shaped side compartments which were designed for storing chess pieces, cards, counters or other gaming accessories. Nestled beneath, the second largest table incorporates a finely inlaid chessboard which is revealed when withdrawn from the nest, creating a sophisticated games table whilst retaining the elegant appearance of a traditional quartetto when closed.
Each table is raised on beautifully turned barley twist supports united by matching twist stretchers and elegant sledge bases. The rich rosewood displays exceptional colour and striking grain throughout, highlighting the quality craftsmanship associated with the Regency period.
Quartetto tables became fashionable during the Regency era as an elegant solution for entertaining guests. Designed to separate into individual tables before nesting neatly together, they were commonly used in drawing rooms for serving refreshments, card games and social gatherings. Examples incorporating an integrated chess table are particularly rare and highly desirable.
A beautiful and practical piece of Regency furniture combining fine craftsmanship, versatility and an unusual games feature.
