Item Details
A fine and elegant Georgian satinwood tea caddy of exceptional colour and figuring dating to the late 18th century. A particularly attractive example with rich golden tones and strong natural figuring throughout.
The caddy is of rectangular form with contrasting ebony stringing and a central brass carrying handle to the lid. Opening to reveal a beautifully fitted interior with twin lidded compartments and a central glass mixing bowl complete with its original glass stirrer, a feature that adds both rarity and appeal.
Tea caddies such as this were used to store precious tea leaves which in the Georgian period were a luxury commodity. The central bowl was used for blending different teas, allowing the owner to create their own mix, making this both a practical and highly refined object.
The quality of the satinwood is particularly noteworthy with a vibrant colour and fine grain which has developed a superb patina over time. The proportions are well balanced and the piece displays beautifully.
