Antique Georgian Mahogany Inlaid Fold-over Card & Console Table

A very elegant George III mahogany inlaid card table dating to circa 1800, designed to serve equally well as a console or side table when closed. The beautifully figured mahogany top has rounded front corners and is finely outlined with contrasting string inlay, giving the table a particularly refined appearance. The restrained decoration and slender proportions are typical of the late Georgian period, when furniture was becoming lighter and more elegant in design. The shaped frieze is also delicately inlaid and the table stands on four finely turned and tapering legs, with additional supporting legs revealed when the top is opened. The narrow turned legs, with their distinctive ringed decoration, give the table a wonderfully light and graceful appearance. The hinged top folds over to reveal the original green baize-lined playing surface, transforming the piece from an elegant console table into a practical card or games table. When closed, its shallow depth makes it particularly useful in a hallway, drawing room or sitting room.
