A beautiful antique freestanding French lady’s writing desk, or bonheur du jour, dating to circa 1880 and made in richly figured kingwood with fine parquetry inlay, gilded mounts and a marble top. This is a particularly elegant freestanding example, with wonderful proportions and a highly decorative appearance. The upper section is fitted with two cupboards, open compartments and a small central drawer, all decorated with fine geometric parquetry. Above is a shaped marble top surrounded by a pierced gilt-brass gallery, while below is a green leather writing surface with gilt tooling. The main body is beautifully shaped, with further parquetry decoration, a central drawer and richly cast gilded mounts to the shoulders. The elegant cabriole-style legs terminate in gilt feet and are joined by a shaped lower shelf, also decorated with matching parquetry and gilt edging. The quality of the cabinetmaking is particularly noticeable throughout, with the warm tones of the kingwood beautifully contrasted by the lighter inlay, gilded metalwork and marble. The piece is freestanding, allowing it to be positioned away from a wall and appreciated from all sides. This is a very decorative and refined example of late 19th-century French furniture, combining the practicality of a compact writing desk with the elegance and detail associated with high-quality Parisian cabinetmaking of the period.
