Antique Edwardian Gilt Metal Mirrored Grape Vine Drinks Serving Tray

A highly decorative antique Edwardian gilt metal and mirrored drinks serving tray. This unusual tray features an oval mirrored plate surrounded by elaborate openwork gilt metal decoration depicting trailing vines, finely detailed vine leaves, bunches of grapes and scrolling tendrils. The naturalistic flowing design has a subtle Art Nouveau influence, typical of decorative pieces produced around the turn of the 20th century. The grape and vine decoration has long been associated with wine, abundance and hospitality and is particularly appropriate for a tray of this type. It would originally have been used for serving or displaying decanters, wine glasses and liqueurs, most likely positioned on a sideboard, buffet or drinks table. The mirrored surface would have reflected glassware and candlelight, adding considerably to the presentation. At 63cm wide, this is a substantial and particularly decorative example, equally suited today for use as a drinks tray or as a striking decorative centrepiece on a console, sideboard or cocktail table.
