Antique Dutch Marquetry Walnut Bureau Bookcase Desk Cabinet

A fine antique Dutch marquetry bureau cabinet in walnut, beautifully decorated throughout with intricate floral inlay. The fall front opens to reveal a fitted interior of drawers and pigeon holes designed for writing and organising correspondence, above a series of long drawers for storage. The upper section features a glazed door enclosing shelves, flanked by elegant shaped sides with further marquetry and display shelving. The piece is richly decorated with traditional Dutch marquetry including floral sprays, urns and birds set against a warm walnut ground with crossbanding and stringing. The shaped top with central pediment and flowing serpentine sides gives the cabinet a striking architectural presence. Bureau cabinets such as this were used as both functional writing desks and statement pieces within the home, allowing the owner to store documents, write letters and display important items, reflecting both practicality and status. Condition report Good overall condition for its age with general wear consistent with use. Some light fading and rubbing to the marquetry in places. The interior shows expected wear.
