Antique 17th Century English Oak Correction Chair

A rare and characterful antique English oak correction chair dating to around 1680, with a tall panelled back, solid oak seat and strongly architectural construction. The unusually upright proportions and elevated seat give the chair a distinctive presence and make it a particularly interesting surviving piece of late 17th-century furniture. The high rectangular back is centred by a broad solid oak panel displaying wonderful natural grain and age, framed by substantial uprights and finished with a carved scalloped frieze beneath the top rail. A row of rounded pegs or finials across the crest adds further character to the design. The solid oak seat sits noticeably higher than on a conventional side chair, at 55.5cm, and the chair stands on turned front legs with square rear supports, all joined by substantial stretchers. Chairs of this very upright form are often described as correction or posture chairs, intended to encourage a formal seated position. The oak has developed a wonderfully deep, dry colour and surface over centuries, with the wear, marks and variation that give genuine early furniture so much character. A highly decorative and unusual 17th-century chair, appealing both as a collector’s piece and as a sculptural accent in a period or contemporary interior. Condition Report In good antique condition for its considerable age, with expected wear, marks, surface variation and historic movement consistent with a piece dating to the late 17th century.
