Item Details
A fine and imposing English longcase clock housing an early 8-day brass movement signed by Edin Burgis, London. The square brass dial is richly detailed with a silvered chapter ring engraved with Roman numerals and minute markers enclosing a finely matted centre. The upper section is fitted with a subsidiary seconds dial, while the lower centre incorporates a calendar aperture, a feature associated with higher-quality London work of the late 17th century.
The dial is further enhanced by a set of applied gilt cherub spandrels, finely cast and chased each depicting winged cherub heads framed by scrolling foliate ornament. These early spandrels are characteristic of the late 17th century, preceding the heavier Rococo forms of the mid-18th century, and add both depth and richness to the dial. The hands are of elegant pierced form and retain a pleasing aged surface, complementing the overall patina of the dial.
The movement is of good quality London manufacture, striking the hours and running for eight days between windings. The layout, engraving style, and dial furniture firmly place the movement in the late 17th to very early 18th century, a formative period in English longcase clockmaking. Edin Burgis is a documented London clockmaker of this early period, and clocks by him are considerably less frequently encountered than later 18th-century examples.
The clock is housed in a later burr walnut case constructed in the first half of the 19th century, and clearly made to accommodate an earlier square-dial movement. The case is of good quality, veneered in richly figured burr walnut with attractive book-matched panels. The hood is flanked by barley-twist columns and surmounted by a broken-arch pediment with a carved central shell and foliate detailing. The long trunk door and shaped base are well proportioned creating a visually balanced and impressive overall presence.
This is an honest and appealing example of an early English longcase clock, combining a scarce late 17th-century London movement with a later, well-made walnut case, a pairing that was historically common and remains entirely acceptable to collectors today.

Condition / Servicing Note:
Please note that antique clocks are complex and sensitive mechanical objects. While some clocks may be running at the time of listing we cannot guarantee ongoing performance without a full inspection and testing period by our specialist horologist. Where inspection, testing, or servicing is required this process can take between 2–12 weeks depending on the clock, the work needed, and current workload. This careful approach helps ensure the clock is properly assessed rather than rushed.
